About

The SSNAP organisational audits provide a ‘snapshot’ of the structure and organisation of stroke services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Previously divided into two categories: the acute organisational audit, which included data on the number of stroke beds, staffing, access to specialist treatment and support, and patient and carer engagement, and the post-acute organisational audit, which included data on staffing levels, access to timely multidisciplinary care and 7-day working. The acute orgnisational audit has been run every 2-3 years since 2012, with all rounds achieving 100% participation from eligible trusts and Health Boards. The post-acute organisational audit has been run twice, the first in 2015 and the second in 2021.

The acute and post-acute organisational audits will now be run as one combined organisational audit. The organisational audit will now be run six monthly with data collection periods in May and November each year. The audit will collect a 'snapshot' of services at that time.

The aims of Organisational Audit 2025 are:

  • To enable trusts to benchmark the quality of their stroke services nationally and regionally and audit performance against national guidance
  • To measure changes over time in the resources available for specialist stroke care, in particular the workforce.
  • To measure the extent to which the recommendations made in the previous acute and post-acute organisational audit had been implemented
  • To provide timely, transparent information to patients, the public and professionals about the quality of stroke care organisation locally and nationally.
  • To provide commissioners with evidence of the quality of commissioned services and to identify where improvements to services were needed and make recommendations.

  • Post-acute inpatient care
